MISSION STATEMENT
"We are a Christ-centred Catholic Community committed to providing the highest quality education for our students. Through service, caring and love we strive to create an environment of respect and understanding in which every one can grow."
Overview
St. Thomas Aquinas Roman (STAR) Catholic Separate Regional School Division No. 38 was formed on January 1, 1995 from three former Catholic School Districts. The division extends across a wide area in central Alberta - from Leduc in the North, to Ponoka in the South, Wetaskiwin in the East and Drayton Valley in the West. These communities fall within the boundaries of five different public school divisions and four Regional Health authorities. Collaboration with our partners in health and education places requires a significant commitment of time on the part of administration at all levels in our jurisdiction. The Division Office is situated in the City of Leduc.
Approximately 2200 students are enrolled in the six schools that constitute our division, with quality Catholic instruction offered by 123 full time equivalent teachers with a support staff of over 86 employees. Each community has its own unique profile, still the sense of our identity as a Catholic school community continues to grow.
The City of Leduc has a population of approximately 15,000 or about 5000 households. Leduc is a bedroom community for Edmonton and is located near the Edmonton International Airport. Nisku Industrial Park is located north of the city, with concentration of oil and natural gas industries which affects business revenue and the population base in the community. Agricultural industry also plays a significant role in the community.
The City of Wetaskiwin has a population of approximately 10,000 people and is located 45 minutes south of Edmonton. The economic base for the community includes small business, auto sales and agricultural services. The proximity of Wetaskiwin to the Hobbema First Nations Reserve sees many aboriginal students accessing Catholic education in Wetaskiwin.
The Town of Drayton Valley has a population of approximately 6000 and serves a surrounding population of an additional 16,000 residents. Although the oil industry is a major economic force in Drayton Valley, Weyerhasuser Canada Ltd. operates an OSB plant and a sawmill that greatly impacts the economy. A co-generation plant and agriculture help to round out the diverse economic base that Drayton Valley boasts.
The Town of Ponoka has a population of approximately 6500 and serves a surrounding population of an additional 8000 county residents. Located one hour south of Edmonton on Highway 2, Ponoka's economy is largely based on agriculture, here traditional crops and livestock thrive amid alternative emu, bison, ostriches and elk operations. Commercial diversification in farm sales and value added agricultural industries contribute much to the town's economic base. St. Thomas Aquinas Roman Catholic Separate Regional No. 38 is a publicly funded organization Enrollment: 2168 No. of Schools: 6
